Who I am
Hi! I’m Cameron Zamot.
When people ask where I’m from, I usually say “all over.” It’s true!
I was born in the desert of California. By the time I graduated high school, I had lived in: Peru, Colorado, Alabama, Virginia, Spain, Oklahoma, California (again), and Massachusetts.
I attended school for a year at the University of Maine before reporting to basic training at the US Naval Academy.
I had a great time at the Academy and had intentions of becoming a Marine. I stunted my military career by breaking a few rules too many and got myself kicked out before I graduated.
This period of my life caused me to reevaluate who I am and what I want my legacy to be.
I finished school at the University of Florida, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I met a girl named Lauren at UF, and several years later we got married in her aunt’s backyard.
After graduation, I moved to Colorado, got really into bikes, and found a job.
I worked in sales, engineering, and instructional design at a residential solar company before being laid off in November 2023. By that point, I was living in Raleigh and doing most of my in-town trips on a basket bike. I couldn’t afford my car lease payment!
During my time in Corporate America, I’d been taking classes for an MBA on the nights and weekends. In early 2024, the last semester of my MBA program, I developed an idea for a bike rental business as my final project. In May 2024, I made it a reality: a shipping container bike rental shop called The Bike Library on the shore of Lake Raleigh.
September of 2024 brought me a new opportunity in the form of a job offer as a Senior Transit Planner for the City of Raleigh. It was an awesome experience; I gained a lot of perspective and respect for my coworkers on City Staff.
In January of 2025 I was presented with another fork in the road: Expand The Bike Library or stay with my stable job. I opted to take the jump and spent the next six months building a business near Boylan Heights.
The Bike Library (TBL) Cafe opened in July 2025. I’ve been building it ever since.
Running a business is busy and exhausting. Running for Council is more on an already full plate. Nonetheless, I feel called to put my hat in the ring. I believe in Raleigh, I believe Raleigh is better when more people are on bikes.
I hope you’ll join me in making the City a better place.
